Wedding season is in full bloom and I wanted to just write a quick note about the women I have had the pleasure of meeting so far this season. You are all the most beautiful brides and your friends are all so amazing and caring and helpful. I have been honored to be a part of so many weddings this season so far and I cannot wait to keep going as the summer has just begun. I have had more requests for airbrushing this year than ever before so I thought I would answer a few of the common questions I am asked here...

There are waterproof and non waterproof makeup options depending on how much of a crier you are (hehe) - waterproof makeup requires a special remover to take off, its awesome stuff but you still won't feel it.
Your makeup will feel like it isn't there - in fact you wear appx 5 - 7 drops of product in total on your whole face.
Your skin will look flawless.
It will last all night.
It will not wear off or smudge off.
You will love it!

There is no time in your life up until the day you get married that you have ever looked as beautiful as you do on your wedding day and that I get to be a small part of that is a joy and a blessing and I am here to help you and I will work hard to ensure you are completely happy with how you look.Looking forward to styling all the rest of my beautiful

Happenings...

Hello World...

So much has happened since my last post and I want to write a novel but instead I will TRY to be as short and sweet as possible. I haven't written in a while because I have been so busy with work and my personal life that I literally haven't turned my laptop on for months.

In the past months since the end of January when I posted my last video - so much has happened. I have shot two music videos for Calgary band TRUCK which has been released and USA based death metal band Morta Skuld which will be released on July 5, 2011 (www.dougcook.ca). I got to make two awesome creatures for these videos and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to make the wonderful actors into scary demons!! I am not allowed to post pics of the second vid yet, but here is one from "the Prey" by TRUCK (see the rest of the on-set photography HERE)The second music video was AMAZING and I was so thankful that my friend Nick Johnson (incredible character actor, artist and generally awesome dude - view his art website HERE) was able to be my monster and I can't wait to post pics of him when I am allowed to!!!

On top of the music videos, I have been involved in some wonderful fashion projects with Dori's Diamonds (www.Dori.ca) including but not limited to the launch of the Dori's Doll's spokesmodels at the HINAMATSURI launch party in support of Japanese Relief Efforts,

(Calgary Fashion Blog for more details), preparing my very own Jessica Rabbit for the Calgary Comic Expo print materials with DMac Studios, 4 Weddings and a Concert bridal and jewelry fashion shows and various other projects working with SHIFT talent and Dori's Diamonds.

I have been so busy with wedding consultations and meeting so many lovely brides! I adore the happy faces and delighted oohs and aahs as brides see their bridal makeup and hair looks for the first time during their trials. It has been such a pleasure to not only style these wonderful brides and their bridal parties but to also be asked to attend the wedding - which, as I am essentially a stranger, is quite the honor. Wedding season is in full bloom and I can honestly say I am in the midst of it all and still loving every minute of it - and thank god for my wonderful Kett Jett airbrush system as I would feel naked without it!!!

I have had the opportunity to mentor quite a few new graduates from makeup schools here in Calgary and I am so flattered that these people think that I am someone to look up to - its a huge ego boost and ensures that no matter what, I am on my top game because now I have to make sure these new MUAs have something awesome to see all the time instead of the same old stuff - thanks for pushing me to grow and get better you guys and keep sending me your stuff, I love seeing it and I promise I will bring you all on shoots with me and we will have tonnes of fun!

I have had the privilege to work with some fellow MUAs this season already which has been really nice - I love collaborating and having multiple hands work on my designs so when the completed work steps out onto the runway or in front of a lens, I know it was a positive labour of love and that everyone's unique touches are included - and I am happy knowing my designs were made into something real and amazing!!

This summer is going to be crazy... my boyfriend of 3 years and I split for good, in a rather abrupt fashion which I am still wrapping my head around... and if he reads this, which I doubt, I hope he understands what he gave up on... ANYWAYS...

I have weddings booked each weekend until the end of October. I am travelling to Vancouver at the end of July for IMATS - the International Makeup Artist Trade Show - and I intend on taking a short cruise at the same time for a break. I will be working my butt off as I am also leaving my fulltime job as a producer with New Machine Studios to pursue makeup full time as it has completely taken over my life. I will be accepting more bookings now and working as hard as possible to get my brand going and to develop my beauty studio and product line!!

So, new single-dom, new job, new home (soon...) and a whole new start to my life... its rad and scary and exciting and terrifying all at once and I am gonna do my best!

I will be posting pictures and stories of work I am doing more often so that I don't ever do this long without posting again!

Taking Care of your Makeup

Hey folks!

I am writing today about something that is very important to me and to (most likely) all makeup artists who's careers revolve around makeup products and happy clients.

In this industry there is no room for dirty. When I arrive at a photography studio, a set, a wedding or for any makeup client whatsoever, I have to look good, smell good, have fresh breath and MOST IMPORTANT, my makeup kit has to be clean, organized, fresh, current products, refilled, sanitized and just clean clean clean.

It is of the utmost importance that when you are applying products to people's faces that you are not promoting the spread of germs and diseases by using unclean tools and products. In this post I wanted to talk about proper makeup cleaning and packaging, proper brush cleaning and storage, and how long makeup lasts for so you aren't using expired products on yourself or others.

1. Brush Care and Storage

To start off with, this is an unfortunate picture of me, but I am using it because it shows one of my brush sets organized nicely into a sturdy brush roll, that is purple and lovely and easy to clean.

I have two full brush sets like this one, so that one can be cleaned and drying properly while the other I can be using for work. I don't care where you get your brushes from as long as they work for you. When I am cleaning my brushes, I like to use luke warm running water - anything hotter risks melting the glue that keeps the brush ferrule (the metal piece holding the bristles) attached to the handle and shortening the life of the brush. I keep the handle/ferrule seam away from water and I point the brushes downward to avoid flooding the base of the bristles with water and I use an antibacterial gentle dishsoap made by Dawn - this gets the makeup off beautifully, keeps the bristles soft and is not hard on my hands or the brushes. Once they have been cleaned, I reshape the bristles with my fingers while they are wet and then lay them down down on a towel, with the tips of the brushes hanging over the edge of the counter so the wet bristles can properly air dry. I let them dry for 24 hours before packing them away so I know they are clean and dry before using them. I use my second set while this is happening. I keep my brushes in a proper brush roll with a flap that covers the tips so when I roll the brushes up, the brush heads are not in contact with eachother. The roll should be made of a soft, pliable synthetic material so it can be cleaned and sanitized without fear of ruining the material.

2. How long does makeup last?

The shelf life of makeup is specific to each product type and of course will be extended if you keep things clean and follow some simple steps (you wouldnt use an old filthy toothbrush so why would you use a crusty old mascara or rancid lipstick?)

Here are some general rules of thumb for how long makeup lasts if stored and cleaned properly:

Concealer/Cream Foundations: Up to a year
Liquid Foundation: Water based will last up to a year, oil base up to 1.5 years - shake your foundation bottle regularly and clean the tip/lid and store out of direct sunlight.
Face Powders: Up to 2 years
Sponges: Use disposable ones or wash the non disposable ones weekly and discard each month.
Pencils: When sharpened regularly and stored with a lid on, up to 3 years
Eyeshadow: Up to 3 years
Brushes: Clean personal brushes every month or so
Lipstick: Throw out when it doesn't apply smoothly (chunky) or it starts to smell bad - max 4 year shelf life (keep them in a cold place like the fridge for longevity of oils used in the lipstick)
Lipgloss/Creams/Balms etc: If they start looking murky from lots of usage and color mixing, throw it out. Try, instead, to use the back of your pinky nail to scoop out balms and creams to avoid constantly shoving your dirty finger into your products and avoid, if possible, using the wand of glosses or lip colors directly on your mouth, smear some from the wand to the back of your hand and then apply with your finger or a brush and your gloss will always be fresh and will last much longer.
MASCARA: This is the worst one. It expires in 2-3 months, and in a shorter amount of time if you pump the wand exposing the easily drying mascara cream to air. If you never pump the wand, and use a makeup sanitizing spray on your wand each time before you put it back into the tube, you can increase the life of your mascara but the bacteria and microbes on your lashes and around your eyes cause for almost immediate contamination of mascara - you should NEVER share mascara unless you use a disposable spooly wand each time and never put back into the mascara container a wand used on someone's eyes.

3. Keeping Makeup Clean and Fresh

When it comes to keeping your makeup clean, the easiest thing to remember is to keep anything that touches the makeup clean - ie. brushes, fingers etc. If you are applying a product to your face directly from the container it comes from, ie. lipstick or mascara, know that you'll have to do a little more work to keep it clean and fresh. Invest in BEAUTY SO CLEAN a makeup sanitizing spray (or a bottle of isopropyl alcohol and a pump spray bottle you can pour it into) that evaporates quickly, can be used to spray down lipsticks, any pressed powder (NOT loose powders) mascara wands, brushes, etc. If you spray and wipe down your lipsticks and spray and let your eyeshadows dry every once in a while and take makeup out of the containers it comes in with a clean brush or washed hand each time, your makeup will have a fresher, nicer feel, you will avoid bacterial/dirty makeup related breakouts and you'll save money because your products will last longer.

If the makeup containers themselves are dirty, take a makeup cleansing wipe and clean them

off! If you have broken powders, throw them away or put them into a clean and empty lipbalm container with a secure lid or buy little jars from beauty supply and use that broken powder as loose shadow or other product. If your brushes are running free in your makeup bag, buy a 3 dollar toothbrush holder from Walmart and use that to store them upright and you'll feel more professional and your face will thank you.

Invest in a nice makeup case or bag or set of plastic mini drawers so you can properly organize your makeup and prevent the unfortunate "grab bag" syndrome where each morning you dig and dig through a giant bag looking for that one thing - make it easier for yourself and organize your makeup - it lowers the risk of spills, accidental opening of products and you'll know where to find everything making your makeup routine a breeze.

Makeup should be a joy in every way. A luxury and a pleasure to apply and should be a LOT of fun but you need to take care of your products and clean your tools the same way you clean your kitchen, do the dishes, wash your underwear and change your sheets - take care of your makeup and you will feel and look better and enjoy applying and wearing it more.

Monday Makeup Tips

Hey all...

Mondays suck. After the amazing fun had over the weekend, the parties, the drinks, the movies, the dinners, the bowling, the games nights, everything - Mondays are a little rough. We don't drink enough water on the weekends, we don't stick to our diets on the weekends *guilty* and come Monday, we, and by that I mean I, look terrible - see pic... just terrible....

I wanted to let you all know about the makeup tricks I use to look good come Monday morning. Before I go to bed Monday night I make sure to have a shower. In the shower I do the following:

Wash and condition my hair

Exfoliate my face with my Neostrata microdermabrasion kit

Exfoliate my whole body with a lovely scented bodywash that smells yummy

Shave/wax everything! :D

Finish off my shower with a cold water rinse to feel fresh and clean.

Following this, I use an alcohol free toner on my face immediately to keep my skin moist until I am done putting a nice lotion on my legs, elbows, hands and feet. Now is the perfect time to pluck my eyebrows to make sure they are all cleaned up for Monday morning. I brush my teeth followed by some Crest whitestrips while I moisturize my face with an extra emollient moisturizer, I LOVE KIEHL'S! I let my hair air dry a bit then I flip my head over, apply a heat styling spray (Goldwell is awesome) then on the lowest setting, blow dry my hair until dry. I apply a little bit of styling powder to my clean and dried roots to ensure overnight my hair doesnt get greasy feeling. I remove my teeth whitening strips, put on an extra moisturizing chapstick, eyecream last and voila! I am all shiny and new and ready for bed.

When Monday morning comes along, I wake up and feel awesome cause I know I did all my stuff the night before.

Makeup Tips:

After a gentle cleanse/tone/sunscreen/moisturizer, I do my hair to let my face calm down and the redness from washing it to abate.
I start by applying a green primer to ensure my skin's redness isnt going to show and giving myself a smooth and soft complexion - this means I dont have to load on the foundation to correct redness. LESS IS MORE!
I apply a brightening correcter under my eyes, around my nose and wherever there is darkness or scarring on my chin or around my mouth.
I take a soft pink (think baby pink) cheek tint and apply a small amount to the outside of the apples of my cheeks to give myself that pretty, fresh, natural flush
Take a lid primer, prime lids and leave them bare but the primer helps to subtly even out lid skin tone and prevent greasy lids throughout the day
Curl lashes and lots of mascara!
A nice tinted lip balm after brushing teeth gives a pretty pout that is natural, not too sticky and is moisturizing.

All together, the well blended and natural makeup is quick, taking only 10 mins or so, fresh and pretty and the only thing anyone says to me come Monday morning is "wow, you look like you had a relaxing weekend" and its true, I do look that way with these simple tricks.

SUMMARY: Keep things natural, simple, fresh and pretty and you will glow :)

In this article, there is one point that I MUST make clear. The following quote is completely incorrect.

“Clients would rather use eco-friendly makeup because they have no worries on whether the products are clogging their pores so there wouldn’t be as many problems for their skin,” Greig said.

There is NO SUCH THING as a makeup that does not clog your pores. There is no product in the world that we smear on our faces that, unless it evaporates cleanly leaving no residue whatsoever - like water - that keeps our pores totally clean and unclogged. DO NOT think that organic/eco-friendly products are better for you because they do not clog your pores. They are still makeup and they still clog your pores. Period.

Be informed! Make smart decisions based on experience, common sense and personal choice.

New Year New Me

Alright - so this is going to sound lame as it is the start to a New Year but I swear it is not because of the New Year I am making this plan for myself... this is NOT some run of the mill resolution to break in a few weeks.

I need to get healthier. Last year was an amazing year for me with a lot of really cool things that happened, a lot of shitty things, a lot of hard work, more work, no sleep and more work. In the past year, because of the craziness that was my life - I gained a LOT of weight. Now I know I know - you're supposed to love yourself and feel gorgeous no matter what but there comes a time when that just isnt realistic no matter how good you feel about yourself ... that time came for me and I am now ready to make the dramatic leap into adult bodyhood - no more of this fat-skinny-fat yoyo nonsense.

I am moving into a cool new phase of my life where I take better care of myself and focus on myself more. No more putting others before myself 100% of the time - from here on out, I will work very hard to ensure that I am considering myself first and that I take care of myself better. With all the work and the work and the work, I made no time for me and I got fat. Period. Now is a perfect time to change that.

Working in the fashion and beauty industry is hard enough without adding the stress of feeling overweight to the mix. Its hard for me to give instructions to models on set now without feeling somewhat ridiculous and I love directing! On top of that I love to look pretty - as a makeup artist, its my favorite thing in the world getting dolled up for a night or a photoshoot or something where I could potentially be meeting new people but it just doesnt feel right if I dont feel comfortable in my clothes or am not loving my body.

Now ladies don't get me wrong, I have never been nor will I ever be "skinny" - what I am going for here is healthy - at my most unhealthy gross skinny pseudo anorexic weight I was 140lbs - I am just not a tiny person - the literal big boned girl, so I am going for 155 - that would be perfect for me - but that is a LOT of pounds, a whole new way of eating, a lot of exercise and a whole new attitude towards food away... its going to be hard...

Hey world - so I haven't written in a while, but I thought I should jot down some thoughts.

Its been a whirlwind few months! I was featured in the Calgary Herald (see photo) and my calendar after that completely filled up! I am very grateful and thankful to everyone who has been so supportive of me and my insane career that leaves very little room for anything but sleep.

I was very fortunate to have caught the eye of the Herald's Val Berenyi who booked me to come and give her makeup lessons at her home, something that I love to do. I had a wonderful time going through her makeup and giving her tips and tricks on how to get the best use out of the products she already owns. She gave my information to Ms. Theresa Tayler of the Calgary Herald and voila! After a long interview in which I was suuuuper nervous and if you know me you know I tend to jabber on when i'm nervous - a few weeks later and one home consult for Theresa and there was the article on the front page of the lifestyle section in all its glory. I was overwhelmed with the response but so excited to meet all the new people and teach teach teach!

It has been a struggle for me learning to balance all my jobs, but I think it is really paying off because now I am the proud new owner of my first car, I invested for the first time and I actually feel like a grownup! I am 26 and have never owned a car before now and its a feeling I can't even describe, its that good. My boyfriend Glen has always been so supportive letting me use his car to do all my work, but thankfully I no longer strand him at home and use the car all the time, I don't have to worry about his life being controlled by my schedule which is a relief for both of us.

As AFW has just passed us by as well as various fun events like the Golden Ticket party and Fashion show - I am left with some really fun memories, like putting double stick tape on some very cute and very orange Oompa Loompas, glamorizing Ms. Ruby of Ruby Ellen Designs for AFW and The Golden Ticket, and getting to sit backstage at a lot of really cool events after whirlwind makeup and hairstyling on so many tall gorgeous ladies - it feels so good to be at least partially responsible for the hotness of some of Calgary's most gorgeous women - I truly love being an MUA, and I want to get better and better. My goal is to be the best and I am slowly but surely getting my name and skillz out there. I am looking forward to a beautiful Christmas season and a gorgeous New Year!! But first, there is the ever important MUA holiday - HALLOWEEN!!! I am having a costume specially made for me by Ruby Ellen Designs and I will be out and about to show it off for most of October hahaha - and Adam Kuzik (AK Photography) will be shooting me and offering some wicked Photoshoot prices for those who want to capture their amazing costumes in some excellent photos.

So suffice it to say, published, new car, AFW, Golden Ticket, Halloween, work work work - its been insane but I love it. I promise to post more blog entries to keep peeps posted - ciao for now!!!

Pink Brows!? Betsey Johnson?! OH YES!

Ok, so this weekend has been amazing so far.... Here's the scoop...

Saturday was pretty much the most relaxing day ever. After this past week, I was a wreck! My jobs, all three of them, were insanely busy with wedding, photoshoots, end of second quarter accounting, ridiculous late nights, finishing the last episode of our show, getting all materials and deliverables to our broadcasters.... OH MY GOD! Craziest few weeks of my life!!! But, thanks to my wonderful friends Amy, Eric and Corey, I scheduled myself into the wonderful Stillwater Spa at the Hyatt in Calgary for a much needed spa afternoon. After getting my hair done at Fabu, I was off to the spa for 4 gorgeous hours of relaxation. Totally rejuvenated, I headed out to see Inception with Glen, which was awesome! When I got home, it was time to prep for the next day shoot!!

I was sooooo excited for this shoot! Jasmin Dosanj (http://www.jasmindosanj.com/) contacted me for a shoot a few weeks ago. A few months ago I worked with Jasmin doing a shoot for Calgary's N.R.T. Fashions for Nicole's (owner/founder NRT) new designs. It was a gorgeous shoot, beautiful shots that I loved and so I was very excited when she called me again to work on a creative shoot for Betsey Johnson. (LOVE HER).

Calgary's fashion scene is growing, and one of the signs of that growth is the lovely new Fashion central downtown. Betsey Johnson has opened a beautiful boutique in this new Fashion Central and the store is completely perfect and I want to buy everything inside it!! Jasmin arranged to borrow a fabulous dress that screams Betsey, and an incredibly gorgeous structured jacket and skirt that looked rocker and chic all at once. Throw in some gorgeous Betsey accessories and some seriously hot shoes, and we have one smokin' wardrobe.

My part comes in when we are styling our lovely model Vonda, and I got to do something extra awesome! PINK EYEBROWS! Such a fun idea! And being the eyebrow freak that I am, I was clearly all over this one. Teaming up with Drew Belan (Metro Urban Hair Studio), a super funny, vivacious and stylish Stylist, we gave Vonda the best possible look to rock the Betsey Johnson hotness. It was so much fun watching Vonda do her thing, and Jasmin rock her photographer power stance. I got some sweet behind the scenes shots of everyone. Enjoy! Can't wait to see the finals from this shoot, its gonna be gorgeous!

Pout Clothing - GORGEOUS

So yesterday evening I had the pleasure of working with a gorgeous and talented crew in an unlikely place. We began at Forest Lawn Auto Parts shop and I got to style the girls while they sat on an old bench seat torn out of a truck or something - the whole place smelled of grease and metal and dirt and it was fantastic!

I wanted to do something retro and 80's styled for the pseudo-hardrock-car-crash shoot we were about to do with some of the most gorgeous clothes I have ever had the chance to work with. The lovely Kirsten Summersgill of Pout Clothing brought pieces to shoot for her new Fall and Spring collections - they were absolutely gorgeous and her styling was obviously key to this shoot's success. There was not a single accessory or shoe or piece of clothing that didn't pass the inspection of her keen fashion sense.

Gifty of Kiya photography set the mood of the afternoon by making sure that everyone was always smiling and laughing - the best type of shoot in my opinion. The lovely models Annie and Kelsey fit the Rocker Chic look perfectly and after I worked some makeup magic, we were ready to go - shooting in and around stacked old broken cars, the junkyard was fabulous! Gifty was a talented, generous and open photographer who was always excited to show us the next most amazing shot and it was a pleasure to work with her.

Great night, lots of laughing, beautiful shots and one tired MUA home to bed.

What a week so far!!

Hey hey!! So it was my 26th birthday on Monday and so far it has been such a wonderful birthday filled with fun things!! I went to my moms house on my actual birthday and she made the tastiest dinner ever!! Shepherds Pie is one of my fav foods of all time and my mom made an extra tasty one. I got some beautiful gifts from my family - namely some beautiful handmade glasses from my mom, pink and silver glass, absolutely beautiful. The color of the night was obviously pink as Glennie, my sweet hunny, got me two bottles of the most delicious pink bubbly wine (Emeri Pink Moscato) that I have coveted for months since I went to the Grape Escape and tried it for the first time! He also got me a lovely blouse and a GC for Chapters since he knows there are some makeup books I have had my eye one :) Tuesday came with more awesomeness as Glennie's lovely family took me out for dinner at the Laurier Lounge for an excellent fondue dinner!! Glennie and I actually went there on one of our few dinner dates over the course of our relationship (we dont really eat out as a rule) and it was just as nice the second time as it was the first time (perhaps sans the romance lol). His family gave me an amazing, and yes, hot pink! iPod!! I have never had one before and I am so excited to have gotten one as I have been without the capability of portable music for over a year and a half now... stupid POS Zune doesn't work...

Anyways, I am officially the luckiest girl ever to have people in my life who love me so much to do such special things for me on my birthday and I am so happy and thankful. Glennie and I are going to get our yearly new Stampede shirts tonight and this weekend is Stampede SneakaPeak and my official Birthday Party which I have called #26 Margaritaville cause its going to be a tropical party!!!!! Sooo looking forward to it!!!!

Welcome to my Makeup Design blog!!! Brought to you by yours truly, Kesar Lacroix, I am having such a wonderful year working with such wonderfully talented people and I felt that I should start blogging about it so the world can know just how awesome these people are!!!
